Persephone is the daughter of Demeter, goddess of the Earth and of the harvest. Lesson by Iseult Gillespie, directed by KERO Animation Studio. Iseult Gillespie shares the myth of the goddess of spring. Hades wanted Persephone as his wife, so he carried her down into the Underworld where she was forced to marry him. As she was picking a flower, the ground beneath her split open and Hades rose up in his his chariot. He wrenched Persephone from Cyane, dragged her into his inky chariot, and blasted back through the earth. Several versions of Persephones myth begin with her gathering flowers in a field. Hades indeed complied with the request, but first gave her a kernel of a pomegranate to eat, whereby she became doomed to the lower world, and an agreement was made that Persephone should spend one third (later writers say one half) of every year in the underworld with Hades, and the remaining two thirds with the gods above. The most detailed is recounted in the Homeric 'Hymn to Demeter.' Persephone (or Kore) was the only daughter of Hades sister Demeter, the goddess of corn (wheat) and agriculture. Interestingly, the goddess is frequently depicted as the helpless, pure maiden in various versions of the Hades and Persephone myth. In Roman mythos, she is called Proserpina which means to shoot forth. Suddenly, the earth split, and a terrifying figure arose. The major myth associated with Hades is how he obtained his wife, Persephone. Persephone is a dual goddess: a chthonic deity (presiding over the dead) and a goddess of fertility (life). As they admired a flower, they noticed it tremble in the ground. In fact, Hades was one of the most reasonable of the gods In. He’s the god of the dead He’s the bad guy He kidnapped her But that is a poor interpretation of the myth of Persephone, and an even poorer interpretation of Hades’ character. One day, Persephone was frolicking in a meadow with the nymph, Cyane. Persephone never fell in love with Hades, one argues. The myth is referenced in many ancient works, including Homer’s The Illiad and The Odyssey and Virgil’s The Aeneid. Over six centuries later, the Roman poet Ovid wrote about the myth of Persephone in Book V of the Metamorphoses. Dig into the Greek myth of Persephone, who is abducted by Hades and is only allowed to leave the underworld every spring. The earliest account of the myth is the Homeric Myth to Demeter, from the seventh century BC. ![]()
